The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a prominent awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
