The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction implies that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously flexible, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
