Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
